CAROLINE

1) What do you think of holistic and homeopathic methods of medical treatment? Do you think they will always inherently be thought of as "feminized"?

This is an interesting question. Perhaps, our contemporary perception of "holistic" (as something "other" than the traditional, allopathic medicine we in he west have become familiar with) has been aligned with feminism as "otherness." But when you look back at the cultures that brought those holistical principles to us (India, China, Africa etc.) their ancient "holstic" medical practices were as misogynistic if not more than our own. Think of the "medicine men," in Africa the ancient Aurvedic healers in India, even the "yogi's. These medicinal practices, which were considered highly potent, and these cultural positions which were highly revered, were reserved only for the eldest, most experienced men. The "westernization" of these traditions opened a lot of doors for female practitioners in both their countries of origin and the U.S.
In our minds, we have rewritten the history of these practices. Ancient female healers, were perceived by westerners as practicing witchcraft. But westerners perceive these holistic traditions (practiced by men or women) as "other," so there you have it. Hmmm.. westerners attributing the feminine with otherness? What a new trend...
